Sh. Ibn Uthaymin: The Way of the Salaf, or the Salafi Hizb?
When parties (ahzab) become numerous in the Ummah, then do not give allegiance to a particular party (hizb). Many groups appeared from an early time, such as the Khawarij, the Mu’tazilah, the Jahmiyyah, and the Rafidah. In recent times, there has appeared the Ikhwanis, the Salafis, the Tablighis, and the like. Put all these sects to the side and look forward, and that is what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم guided us to when he said, “Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs.” There is no doubt that the obligation of all Muslims is to adhere to the madhhab of the Salaf, not to ascribe to a particular party called “the Salafis”. It is obligatory on the Islamic nation that it follow the madhhab of the Salaf al-Salih, not that it have partisanship (tahazzub) to those called “the Salafis”, for there is the path of the Salaf and there is a group called “the Salafis”. What is required is to follow the Salaf.”
– ibn Uthaymin, Sharh al-Arba’in al-Nawawiyyah, Hadith no. 28, pp. 308-309.
Therefore, beware, dear brother, of seeking to follow “the Salafis” at the cost of following the way of the Salaf. Beware of making your goal to appease “the Salafis” by ignoring the real teachings of the Salaf or throwing them behind your back.
